Story is a powerful tool. Especially considering the emotional mechanics that are involved. But, what makes for a great story? The answer is: conflict. The reason stories are so compelling and engaging is because it connects us on a human level and ties us back to the human experience. Conflict isnt about a good guy or a bad guy. Its about someone trying to win, stop something, escape from somewhere, or accomplish a particular goal. But, in the journey to that point B they face resistance. Theyre faced with complications that slow them down, challenges, and are forced to consider action that otherwise they would have never thought of. Essentially, theyre tested. Being a witness to that struggle through the window of narrative, were compelled to follow along. We know the best of stories are true stories, especially since the lessons we derive from them are real. We all have amazing stories. We share them with people we know every day. When sharing stories, take a pause to put emphasis on the struggle, challenges and human experience we face along the way.
