Story of the Day: 2BR02B by Kurt Vonnegut (– if you find the title confusing, try pronouncing 0 as naught). In a future where aging has been cured and the population of the United States is strictly controlled (i.e. When someone comes in, someone else has to make way), a man sits in a hospital, waiting for his wife to deliver triplets. The mans grandfather has agreed to step aside, an unpleasant sacrifice that stills deals with just a third of the problem. A painter working on a mural observes how this one plays out. I love the late great Kurt Vonneguts books, and consider him one of the most daring, humorous and forward-thinking writers of the 20th century, a man of remarkable imagination. Even now, still unfairly pigeonholed as a mere science fiction writer, the best of his work, like Cats Cradle, Breakfast of Champions and particularly Slaughterhouse Five, has made him essential reading for generations of readers. This distopian yarn, from the collection, Bagombo Snuff Box, is something of a Vonnegut special: short, funny, worryingly plausible and oddly poignant. Youll read it in a few minutes, but itll take a lot longer to forget.
