Story of the Day: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut. In the year - TopicsExpress

Story of the Day: Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut. In the year 2081, everyone is finally equal, both physically and mentally. The laws are enforced by the Handicapper General and his team, and the smartest in society are brought into line by a thought-hindering implant that releases a high noise every few seconds. Young Harrison, a special and gifted child, seems immune to the governments limiting techniques, so he is taken from his parents, George and Hazel. A wonderful and disturbing dystopian view of the future from one of Americas greats. The main thrust of the story focuses not on the main character but on how the world has crippled his loved ones, and it really is beautifully told. Its very short, and recounted largely in dialogue, but itll leave a permanent mark on you and reveals all of Vonneguts immense artistry as a writer. tnellen/cybereng/harrison.html
