Story of the Day: In the Shadow of War by Ben Okri. In wartorn Nigeria, a father attempts to protect the innocence of his young son, an impossible task given that the boy, Omavo, has so much curiosity and that their world is so full of death and destruction. Ben Okri is best known for his Booker Prize-winning novel, The Famished Road. I havent read nearly enough of his work but I came across this piece of short fiction in a great anthology called The Art of the Story and it really struck a chord with me. In essence it is a coming-of-age story, playing out against the backdrop of a brutal war.
