Story of the Day: The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe. The narrator, suffering from an over-acuteness of the senses, is so disturbed by the eye of the old man with whom he lives, that he plots murder. Seven aborted attempts lead to success on the eighth night, and he smothers his victim, all the while listening to the thunderous beat of the heart. Dismemberment follows, and the parts hidden under the floorboards, but a scream during the murderous struggle has been overheard, and the police called. This is a story that most people will have read and virtually all will be aware of, but Poe really was a master at creating tension in a tale. As usual with the master, immensely creepy and, like all his best tales, demanding of regular re-reads. It takes just a few minutes to get through, but will take far, far longer to forget. poemuseum.org/works-telltale.php
