Story time. I was headed back to San Diego from northern California in the Southwind pictured hereabouts, shes purring along Interstate 5 no problem and Im way out in the middle of the San Fernando valley when muggins here goes, Hey, theres cruise control. Never tried it, wonder if it works? I click the stick on the column and whirrrrrrrrrrr, the engine slowly dies and I roll to a stop on the hard shoulder. Theres sixteen wheelers roaring by me like small tornados rocking the coach so hard in their slipstream I m afraid itll fall over. Images of $2K tow vehicles are coming to mind. Grab the cell phone, no signal! Eventually a CHP car pulls up, the officer was actually charming, smiling, friendly, (hey, it happens), gets on his radio to base, back and forth for half an hour, no help, not even a $2K tow truck available. Finally he says we cant find a tow but theres a mechanic on his way and the cop wishes me luck and takes off. Shortly after a small Toyota pickup arrives and Im like, Oh thats gonna do it, you couldnt tow a big car with that!, and at my door appears this Mexican guy with a backwards baseball cap grinning up at me. You gotta problem Senor? Damn right I have problem José., Orelio., Scuse me?, Orelio, thats my name. So I explain what happened while Orelio is taking off the engine cover, (muggins didnt even have a toolkit on board), and in a moment he says, Cruise control came undid Senor, you got tape? As it happened there was the butt end of a roll of gaffer in a drawer, he tears off a small piece, fiddles about a bit, reaches for the key and she starts! Okay now Senor, see? The engine revs away happily. I mean it was right under the hatch, little bit of dodgy plastic clip, he didnt even get his hands dirty and Im both humiliated and overjoyed. He would only accept 50 bucks, (good job cause that was all the cash I had and he couldnt accept plastic). Anyway, I told him of my eternal gratitude and said, Someday Orelio, Im going to post your picture on the Internet and youll be famous! (RH has 885 members, thats quite famous innit?)
