Story time! Ive recently added a painting to my collection that I am thrilled to share with you all: Paolo Parentes Misdirection from Mercadian Masques. This deal took several months and, in some shape or form, ended up involving a variety of people from our community. I want to give special thanks to François-Yves Guigner, Jack Johnson, Nick Detwiler, Jason Jaco, Visna Harris, Will Larson, and one other very fantastic gentleman that does not use Facebook. Whether you were either directly involved or simply offered spiritual guidance, I sincerely thank you. :) This illustration is special to me for a few reasons. Several of my friends in the community know that I am a huge Mercadian Masques fanatic, as its the set that really sparked my childhood love for Magic: The Gathering. Theres a nostalgia factor from 1999 that, for me, cant be matched by any other era from the game. I began with Portal Second Age in 1997, but my heyday started with Urzas Destiny and ended with Mercadian Masques. When Mercadian Masques came out, (much to the dismay of the public), Misdirection was one of the cards I often saw and read about in magazines such as Scrye, InQuest, and TopDeck. I still have many of the magazines from that time period. The illustration to Misdirection really defines that era for me. Also, I simply had a lot of fun trying to say the Target spell with a single target targets another target instead tongue-twister as quickly as I could. At the time, Paolo Parentes artwork was of great fascination to me. It was bold, colorful, and full of energy. Masticore was one of the first illustrations that really caught my eye from the game. From there on, I always kept an eye out for pieces that Mr. Parente had illustrated. I especially enjoyed the movement and humor involved in Misdirection. That subdued purple background was and still is fascinating to me. As I got into collecting art, I wasnt sure if Id ever own a piece of his that meant something to me, as there were only a small handful. The final reason that I am so drawn to Misdirection is perhaps the most noteworthy one. I still play with Misdirection… every single time that I play Magic! I cant think of the last time I entered a Vintage tournament without a Misdirection in my Oath of Druids deck. Lately, Ive actually been playing with a pair of them. Virtually every other painting in my collection was added entirely due to its aesthetic qualities; its nice for one of my pieces to be in there for its function, too. It is truly incredible to own the artwork to a card that I look at every time I sit down to play. I hope you all enjoy the scan.
