Strack & Vantil On 09/10/2014 at approximately 2:40PM officers were dispatched to Strack-N-VanTil for a report of a theft in progress. Information being given by a Commander of the Highland Police Department informed us that two M/B subjects (one wearing a gray t-shirt, the other a black t-shirt) were in the store loading a shopping cart with baby formula & Red Bull. Upon arrival, officers were advised that the two subjects had now exited the store and were out front. One officer had first contact and ordered the two to stop and place their hands on a vehicle nearby. K9 Clark was deployed to provide officers with protection as the two were taken into custody w/o incident. Highland PD officer arrived on scene and took custody of the pair as I met with Stracks Loss Prevention Officer and she had received a call from the Highland store about two M/Bs who had just fled their store with a cart full of baby formula & Red Bull. As the Loss Prevention Officer was on the phone, she observed the two M/Bs in question enter the store immediately starting surveillance. During that time, Loss Prevention and several other employees watched as the pair loaded a shopping cart full of baby formula & Red Bull. They pushed the cart a few feet from the front door then split up. After doing so, one M/B started talking to a cashier asking if she was single in attempt to distract her. The second M/B then walked outside leaving the cart by the front doors. After asking the cashier if she would walk out and have a cigarette with him, which she refused, he then joined the other subject in front of the store and was later stopped by police. Loss Prevention believes the pair were spooked by all of the employees tailing them. Loss Prevention had the 89 items totaled for a retail value of $1305.39. The suspects were transported to Highland PD and identified. They will be charged for their crime in Highland and warrants will be issued for both for Attempted Theft in STC.
