Straight Baby Boomers (born 46 - 64): Youre the New Gays! And now youre the people who are destroying marriage and western civilization. For older couples, theres more than empty nests to worry about -- theres no nest! Hello, Im Tony Perkins with the Family Research Council in Washington. There are a lot of gray areas in divorce -- at least when it comes to the older population. Based on the latest numbers, the Baby Boomers are becoming the marriage busters. Since 1990, the divorce rate for Americans over 50 has doubled -- and more than doubled for people over 65. The Washington Post looked at the data that still has researchers scratching their heads. And it wasnt just remarried older people who were getting divorced. Many were on their first marriage -- and been together more than 20 years. So what gives? Well, for one thing, divorce is more socially acceptable than it used to be in our parents generation. And lately, psychologists say, the me generation cares more about making themselves happy than keeping a lifelong commitment. And thats something the church should address.
