Straight Skinny Epitaph: Washington journalist Diana McLellan - TopicsExpress

Straight Skinny Epitaph: Washington journalist Diana McLellan has died. She was, as our mutual friend Thomas W Shales says, Washington, D.C.s last great iconoclast: Tom writes, She knew just how to deal with and defuse the pomposities of this town. Because her metier was gossip, and not politics, the sharpness of her eye and commentary never got the serious analysis and attention she deserved. But everybody read *The Ear* first thing every day when *The Star* came out. Tom also mourns the simultaneous passing of former Republican senator Howard Baker, aged 88, who was among the last of the responsible and sane members of the formerly grand old party. It didnt feel so much kinder and gentler in the 70s, what with the war and Watergate and the civil/womens/gay liberation stuff happening. But maybe it was. And there was Diana. For Diana, who was an immigrant to America, from Walt Whitman, another warrior optimist: Over the tree-tops I float thee a song! 160 Over the rising and sinking waves—over the myriad fields, and the prairies wide; Over the dense-pack’d cities all, and the teeming wharves and ways, I float this carol with joy, with joy to thee, O Death! bartleby/142/192.html
