Strange places I have been --- Varanasi, India, on the River Ganges --- Where the Hindus from all over India go to die. The streets away from the river are littered with the old , sick and dying, sitting or lying, waiting for death and their turn on the funeral pyres blazing on the ghats (stone steps) by the Ganges. The ritual goes on around the clock, a steady stream of corpses wrapped in white cloth delivered to the flames, the ashes then thrown into the river. Its a sacred place, you can watch but no photographs. A young Australian girl dared lift her camera, she was set upon by a mob of mourners and beaten to death.
