Straw Tuesday #29 Thanksgiving Thank you. Thanks. Gratitude. Noun 1. Thank you - a conversational expression of gratitudethank you - a conversational expression of gratitude thanks - an acknowledgment of appreciation. Noun 2. Gratitude - grat·i·tude (grt-tdtyd) The state of being grateful; thankfulness. From Robert Emmons (What Good is Gratitude): Robert Emmons, perhaps the world’s leading scientific expert on gratitude, argues that gratitude has two key components, which he describes in a Greater Good essay, “Why Gratitude Is Good.” “First,” he writes, “it’s an affirmation of goodness. We affirm that there are good things in the world, gifts and benefits we’ve received.” In the second part of gratitude, he explains, “we recognize that the sources of this goodness are outside of ourselves. … We acknowledge that other people—or even higher powers, if you’re of a spiritual mindset—gave us many gifts, big and small, to help us achieve the goodness in our lives.” Emmons and other researchers see the social dimension as being especially important to gratitude. “I see it as a relationship-strengthening emotion,“ writes Emmons, “because it requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.” Because gratitude encourages us not only to appreciate gifts but to repay them (or pay them forward), the sociologist Georg Simmel called it “the moral memory of mankind.” # # # By the simple act of thinking in thank yous or gratitude you open your heart and mind to so much positive energy. You communicate from a place of having enough as opposed to lack of. This week is Thanksgiving, its a perfect time to think about what it means to give thanks. And, no matter how uphill your climb or winding the road is, there is ALWAYS something to be grateful for. By noticing all that is good in your life, it will diminish that which is not as good - making it easier to walk the path. It would seem clear that Straw understands being thankful and grateful. While she faced so many obstacles on a daily basis she never once complained or acted like her road was any harder than the rest of us. She was always happy to have what she had. Meals, peace, companions, her work, green grass, a breeze on her face, a new day dawning, sun naps, mud rolls, a carrot(s), and so on. Sometimes its the little things that mean the most. What are you thankful for this week? Is there someone you can call or go see who would really love to hear how much you appreciate them or something they did or said? THANK YOU to all of the support that to Spring Reins of Life. Thank you to all horses on this planet, the breath you send out into the world is filled with love and peace...may we only be able to catch some of that and let it settle on our hearts. #StrawTuesday
