Streaming music is better than stealing... but not by much. I - TopicsExpress

Streaming music is better than stealing... but not by much. I make about 50$ a month from Spotify and myself and The Procussions have over 2million listens in the last two years. Spotify has an extremely complicated royalty payout equation, so complicated it seems, that they are unable to explain it. What Ive heard and read is that there are too many variables going on at any given moment which greatly influence an individual artists payout. Like...how popular you were that day, how many users that day, your competition that day, what type of users, what type of ads were running, what time of day- etc. BUT BUT BUT, they do offer - against there own advice - an estimate as to what an artist COULD expect per stream. Again, they advice against thinking in terms of per-stream payment. None the less, their low-ball estimate seems to be between .006-.008 of a cent... per stream. Ok, so if I x .006 (the lowest estimate) by our 2million streams (really its more like 2.5 million or more, I cant tell because I can only see the numbers for the TOP 10 most popular on any given day) it = 120,000$. If I divide that number into 24 months (the 2 years weve been on Spotify) I get around 500.00$- enough to pay for groceries each month. But, I only get about 50$ a month, and unlike most artists on Spotify, I actually own my rights- 100%. A lot of major artists complaining about Spotify are actually on Major labels, most likely splitting their share at least 4-6 ways... But no, I own 100% of all my music, and The Procussions own 100% of all of theirs- thats the TRUE sign of independence. Obviously its not doing much for me on Spotify though. Sure, the numbers may be hard to calculate, sure I understand there is a popularity facto but..e...on...50$ a month for over 2million listens? My solution, Indie...go...go.
