Strength training for paddling The belief that the best training - TopicsExpress

Strength training for paddling The belief that the best training for surfing, is surfing, is not true. The best training for surfing is a combination of surfing and strength/conditioning training. There is no reason that surfing is different from all other sports in the world and all other sports incorporate other training methods that either cannot be achieved through the sport or are a more efficient way to maximize performance. To gain maximum power in paddling we need to have firstly good technique and secondly strong muscles to drive the action - the stronger the muscles the faster the paddle. The primary exercise that I use for this is the natural grip pull up. This utilizes the main driving muscles in a paddle stroke - the pecs and lats. The other exercise I use is triceps pull downs (obviously for the triceps.) The kind of strength that you gain from these exercises is very hard to achieve just through paddling, as there just is not enough resistance to stimulate maximum muscle activation. For endurance and technique there is nothing better than surfing (or swimming), but to gain power for getting into waves earlier and scrambling under sets strength training is a key that should not be overlooked. Here are a couple of good examples of how to do a pull up. https://youtube/watch?v=SNj2kLhMV70 https://youtube/watch?v=r9viiyohMqI
