Stress shuts down the parasympathetic nervous system, as we saw yesterday. It sparks into action your sympathetic nervous system, driven by adrenaline which is released in response to stress. It primes your body for fight for flight ; blood pressure increases, large muscle groups tense and are primed for a sudden blast of action, bowls are emptied, heart rate increases. In the short term this is ok and indeed a positive help to our performance in reaching safety or dealing with a stressful situation but over the long term without finding a relaxation balance it can be exhausting and debilitating to physical and mental health. Its important to find a way to counteract this. Well be exploring a variety of ways to do this over the coming weeks. Theres something for everyone.
