Stretching Our Point of Reference- If you grew up in a diverse community, then you learned the good and not so good about people across cultures. You hopefully developed meaningful relationships across cultures, and learned early on that ethnicity should not be how we fully define another, but that it is only one facet of our being. If you only interacted across cultures in brief, brushes then you probably created your perception on the bits and pieces youve collected over time. To walk into a community where people are categorized by general, superficial, impersonal perceptions is disturbing. It reveals our discomfort and resistance to lend ourselves to truly connecting with fellow human beings. Stereotypes rule and people are shut down without the opportunity to flourish fully. These communities are still very much part of our America today- Defined by generational, racial,cultural, economic differences. We can do better, and we have no choice if we want a stronger community beyond our own time here.
