Strike A Balance Youve likely heard the saying, All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. And its true that working 24/7 is no fun. However, when you own a business or have a high pressure job and you have so much at stake, its easy to let work become all-consuming. Even when youre away from work, you cant help but think about it. But if you dont make time for play, you can put a lot at risk - including your business or job. Youll risk damaging important relationships and youll increase your chances of burning out. Play is important to business success because it helps to relieve stress and clear the mind, thereby allowing you to think freely and tackle problems with a fresh perspective. Thats why its important to strike a balance between work and play. Balance means fulfilling opportunities with family and friends while still ensuring your business runs smoothly. Here are some tips for striking the perfect balance. 1. Prioritize - if you dont determine whats important to you and make time for those things, you wont be happy. Identify what matters most to you - business, family, friendships, recreation, spirituality, etc., so that you have framework from which to structure your time. For instance, set aside one day a week for family or another high-priority activity. 2. Set realistic goals - be realistic about the time commitments for each priority so that you wont find yourself rushing through an activity, which can sap your enjoyment of it. 3. Relax - when you are taking time out for play, relax and keep your mind off work so that you can really enjoy yourself. Doing so will help you to feel refreshed and better able to focus on work when you return. 4. Surround yourself with balanced people - build relationships with other people who live balanced lives so that you can stay on course. If workaholics surround you, you may end up feeling guilty about taking time out for play. On the other hand, if youre surrounded by partiers, you may be tempted to let your work slide. 5. Learn to say no - once youve determined what is important to you, stick with it. Dont let other peoples expectations steer you off course.
