Strike: ASUU Cautions VCs over Conduct of Post UTME ARTICLE | SEPTEMBER 16, 2013 - 5:07AM | BY MICHAEL PAUL The Abuja Zone of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has cautioned Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, who disregard the warning of the Union against conducting Post UTME screening exercise, describing the exercise as illegal and unacceptable by the Union. The coordinator of the Union, Dr Suileman Mohammed, who made this remark during a press briefing, stated that the union is determined to sit at home until government meets its demands. “We also particularly frown at the decision of the authorities of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University , Lapia, who despite their expression of understanding and appreciation of the germane nature of our strike, have attempted to intimidate our members in that branch to abandon this ongoing patriotic and historic course,” he said. Mohammed also condemned the comments of the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, the governor of Benue, Gabriel Suswam and the National Universities Commission (NUC) adding that such comments against the Union and its fight was not in the best interest of education sector in the country. He stated that the members of the zone will continue to support the Union’s leadership in the continuation of the strike until the government fulfils its agreement with ASUU. “We wish to mix no words in informing Nigerians that ASUU is under no threat and will not give in to insincerity and deceit and lack of integrity of the government. No country can rise beyond its level of education; as such we cannot watch our government surrender the future of our country to the agents of imperialism and neo-colonialism. The strike shall continue for as long as government remains unwilling to honour the agreement. “We therefore commend the ASUU leadership for their continuous display of determination and patriotism in the face of threats and intimidation from government and its agencies. We also wish to express profound gratitude to our genuine students, parents the media and Nigerians for their understanding and support and display of high level of awareness and total rejection of government’s propaganda and futile attempts to blackmail our union,” he said.
