Strike King Amendment From U.S. Farm Bill Close Federal Loophole Protecting Animal Fighting Spectators Dear Animal Advocates, The U.S. Senate and House have each passed their own versions of the Farm Bill, and a joint conference committee of senators and representatives will now iron out the differences and present one final bill. Two provisions being considered—one good, one bad—would seriously impact the future of animal welfare. The good provision would make it a crime, nationwide, to be a spectator at and to bring children to an organized animal fight. We want this provision included in the final version of the Farm Bill. The bad provision is the King Amendment, which would weaken states’ abilities to pass laws that protect animals on farms, in puppy mills, and elsewhere. Even more alarming, the King Amendment could strike down many existing state animal cruelty laws, putting many animals at risk. It’s critical that the committee reject this provision. You are receiving this email because one of your senators and/or your representative is on the Farm Bill conference committee. Not everyone can weigh in on the Farm Bill at this point, but you can. What You Can Do Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center right now to urge your legislator(s) on the Farm Bill Conference Committee to 1) Leave the anti-animal fighting language in the bill, and 2) remove the King Amendment.
