Strong trade winds persist across the region with satellite data - TopicsExpress

Strong trade winds persist across the region with satellite data indicating 15-25kt winds across much of the region north of 5N from Palau to the Marshall Islands. Upper-air balloon soundings also show near-40kt winds at 2000ft from Yap to Guam to Chuuk. This translates to gusty conditions today, especially when brief showers pass by. These winds have developed in response to strong high pressure systems moving across the north Pacific--a common pattern for dry--and windy--season. Strong winds will also maintain choppy seas. For that reason, a High Surf Advisory is now in effect for the Marianas. Advisories remain in effect for Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae, with a High Surf Warning in effect at Majuro. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for the Marianas for hazardous seas and strong winds. Exercise caution when dealing with the water. Rip currents will be life threatening. On shore, be watchful of falling debris from trees, especially coconuts.
