Struggle with this movie. Just gave it a re-watch for the first time since it was new and I love the performances and probably love the script, but the lack of any filmmaking excitement annoys the everliving shit out of me. It occurred to me that the problem is that, as a director at this time, LaBute had too much Howard and not enough Chad in him. The films ascetic minimalist non-style, regardless of whether or not inexperience played a part in it, translates into a moralistic view toward the subject matter. Moralistic in a vaguely hypocritical Howard way in that it depicts the emotional rape of an innocent person, but clucks its tongue at it and keeps LaBute (and the audience) at a safe anthropological distance. The film is an attack on our capitalist system and on male chest-thumping and on the kind of weak men and (to a lesser extent) women that are attracted to people like Chad, but were never really complicit with it because its filmed in a way that lets us be the good guys. youtube/watch?v=FtpmAdgl8UI
