Stuck in endless traffic for about three hours this past Friday, on the way to a concert about 60 miles away from home, various somewhat misanthropic thoughts occurred to me. In particular, I was vividly aware that we have almost certainly exceeded the carrying capacity for humankind of our delicate ecosystem. We could build more and more roads, paving over more and more of the earth. Maybe in the short term that would render the roads more useable. But ultimately, that way lies just more of the same. Seems to me we had better do something before the entire ecosystem just breaks under the overwhelming weight of humankind.
