Student Showcase (This is the beginning of a story in imitation of the style of Charles Dickens.) The king with a wide jaw and the queen with a plain face were on the throne of England far from this provincial village. In this huddled host of huts there were newborn bundles of shivers; scattered, starving, scrounging cattle; and overgrown, nettle-infested, crow-plagued yards which crept with darkness, dismalness, dankness, dirtiness, dreariness, and desolation. A bleak place. Although no one in this village was poorer than motherless Belle and her widowed father, they were rich in gratitude, which showed in their domicile. Their cottage was neat, bright, well-groomed, and full of life and hope. The apples in their orchard were ripe and sweet to eat. The flowers in their garden smelled fresh and pleasant to pick. The dew droplets on their grass sparked like diamonds--although I highly doubt that anyone in this poor village would even know what diamonds looked like, since they were so ill-privileged, land-locked, isolated, poverty-stricken, and ignorant.
