Student fasts on Tibetan new year in solidarity with self immolators Phayul[Sunday, March 02, 2014 12:19] DHARAMSHALA, March 2: A Tibetan student started off a 72 hour fast in front of the Martyrs Pillar inside the premises of the Tsuglakhang here marking the Losar or the Tibetan New Year. Tenpa Dhargyal, a Tibetan who escaped to India after taking part in anti China protests in Tibet during the 2008 nationwide protests, said he won’t celebrate the Tibetan New Year but instead sit without food and water during the first three days of Tibetan New Year 2141 as a mark of solidarity with the Tibetans in Tibet. Tenpa said he wanted to extend his support to the protests by Tibetans inside Tibet and show his solidarity with the family and relatives of the Tibetans who have resorted to self immolation as a form of protest. 127 Tibetans, since 2009, have set themselves on fire demanding the exiled Tibetan leader Dalai Lama’s return and end to China’s repressive policies against Tibetans. Since 2008 pan –Tibet protests against Chinese government, Tibetan exiles all over the world have had muted celebrations of Losar, the most celebrated and significant national holidays in the Tibetan lunar calendar. “We can’t forget the brave actions of our martyrs and thousands of Tibetan who continue to fight against the repression in Tibet,” said Tenpa, who is a student at the Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarah. “As a student, I didn’t get the chance to take part in many of the solidarity campaigns for Tibet. So I take this opportunity during the Tibetan New Year for this small act of solidarity campaign for our brethren in Tibet.”
