Students Advance to Nationals in History Day Competition The History Day Competition is an intense research project that students complete using various mediums: documentary, paper, website, performance or exhibit board. The theme changes each year and for 2014, it was Rights and Responsibilities. Students are asked to find both primary and secondary sources as well as provide a detailed annotated bibliography and process paper (outside of their original project). There are 25,000 kids that create a History Day project in MN, and only 1,301 students advanced to state this year. Most of these schools have History Day built into their curriculum so they are able to work on it during the school day. Moose Lake has participated in the History Day Competition for the last four years, sending kids to state each year. Students have done very well in the past, receiving Honorable Mentions, fourth place and a third place prize last year (alternate to nationals). This year, Mercedes Moffett and Courtney Laine created a documentary on eugenics and sterilization in Minnesota titled, Ridding Society of the Unfit: Losing Rights at the expense of Societys Responsibilities. THEY TOOK FIRST PLACE!!!!!!!!!!! They are two of only 65 kids advancing to nationals from Minnesota. The National History Day competition will be held at the University of Maryland June 14-20. Every state plus the American territories and affiliated schools in Europe will attend. Congratulations to these students and Ms. Jackson for their accomplishments!
