Students Celebrate with Veteran’s Day Assembly Rose L. MacDonald first and second grade students were presented with a wonderful Veteran’s Day assembly hosted by the third grade class, featuring songs, flags, discussion, and a story. “We stand as a sign of respect because this is our national anthem,” announced Principal Linda Dubin as students joined in singing the Star-Spangled Banner. The crowd joined in on “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and “The Grand Old Flag” and learned what it means to be a veteran in the armed forces. First grade teacher Lyn Puliafico shared a bit of her husband’s experience, as a 25-year military veteran actively serving in Afghanistan as a nurse. “My husband—Mr. P.—is helping keep us safe and helping to keep the soldiers over there healthy,” said Puliafico. “My daughters and I just got to FaceTime with him Saturday morning and it was very exciting,” said Puliafico. “Mr. P. is a nurse working in a hospital and he helps soldiers who get injured,” said Puliafico. Dubin shared some of our freedoms with her young students, holding up flashcards, one by one. “We are free to learn, but that’s not true in every country,” said Dubin. “We are free to work… free to speak… and free to play,” said Dubin. “I learned that the veterans are very special and kind,” said second grader Bella Hyde. “When you meet a veteran, be sure to say thank you for serving our country,” said Dubin, at the close of the ceremony.
