Students at Clarendon Leadership School led their own - TopicsExpress

Students at Clarendon Leadership School led their own Parent-Teacher conferences Thursday night. It is part of a district-wide initiative that allows students to take ownership of their work and accomplishments. The process is happening now at all grades 3-5 Leadership Schools and will happen in the spring at the K-2 Reading and Math Preparatory Schools. Principal Nicole Herberghs said the student-led conferences have created an unusual excitement in the building, unlike the regular parent-teacher conference time. The students have kept their own data portfolios documenting their work. With the teacher acting as the guide, the students presented their reports to parents. They took the lead role and shared data documenting their progress in all academic areas as well as discipline and attendance,” said Herberghs. “Every student practiced their report. The kids are very excited about this.” Fifth-grade teacher Angie Borland said she likes that it puts the spotlight on the student. “They know their work and they can articulate it,” she said. “It’s not a big secret conference (with their parent.) Math teacher Tina Russell said she loved the sense of accomplishment she saw in her students, who not only shared their strengths and weaknesses, but could set goals and show what they would do to reach those goals for the next report. “We are seeing the excitement and the accountability they have for their own data,” Russell explained. Clarendons K-Club student service organization sponsored a welcome table in the lobby with coffee, while their parent organization held a bake sale and has Book Fair in the café.
