Students at Melbourne Uni are gathering information about the construction of the Black Dolphin Motel. Does anyone know anyone who worked on the construction? In March 2015, the MSD will mount an exhibition in the new Dulux Gallery in the new Architecture Building on the design, landscaping, construction, interior design and marketing of two of Australia’s most important postwar motels: the Mitchell Valley Motel, Bairnsdale (1956-7) designed by architects Mockridge Stahle & Mitchell and landscaped by Beryl Mann and the Black Dolphin Motor Inn, Merimbula (1958-60) designed by architects Grounds, Romberg & Boyd and landscaped by Gordon Ford. Each motel was the brainchild of its entrepreneur David Yencken, who would go onto found Merchant Builders in 1965 and become ABP’s founding Professor of Landscape Architecture.
