Students clean Vrindavan station in support of Modi’s Swacch Bharat Mission Vrindavan, 2nd October: To strengthen the Clean India Campaign of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and fulfill Mahatma Gandhi’s dream for a clean and developed nation, Indian Railways joined hands with Friends of Vrindavan to clean the Vrindavan Railway Platform. Friends of Vrindavan and its eco-school partner Bhaktivedanta Gurukula and International School (Iskcon) together cleaned the Vrindavan railway platform which had remained neglected for a long time. The students of the Bhaktivedanta Gurukula cleaned the railway track near the platform. Hundreds of baskets full of garbage were removed by the students with the support of the FOV volunteers. Other local residents also joined the drive to encourage the students. Shri Dhananjay Gautam a local priest said that the Vrindavan railway station should be developed as a heritage station. The toilets are never opened and cleaned. Vrindavan is increasingly becoming a tourist destination for pilgrims. Its railway station should be developed in a way that could attract more people to this pilgrimage town. Vrindavan should be connected with the other pilgrimage towns through the railway system. Shri V.K. Dwivedi, the Assistant Commercial Manager of the Railways administered the Svaccha Bharat oath to the railway staff, the local residents and the Gurukula students present at the station. V.K. Singh, the Reservation Supervisor of the Vrindavan station was also present during the event. The students read the pledge, “I will remain committed towards cleanliness and devote time for this. I will devote 100 hours per year that is two hours per week to voluntary work for cleanliness. I will neither litter nor let others litter. I will encourage 100 other persons to take this pledge which I am taking today. With this belief, I will propagate the message of Swachh Bharat Mission in villages and the towns” along with the some other pledges. Jagannath Poddar, Director of Friends of Vrindavan, said “We have already dedicated ourselves to making Vrindavan clean, but we can only be successful in our mission when littering is punished by fining offenders.”
