Students for Justice in Palestine at UCSD stands in solidarity with the Black Student Union at UCSD as well as the larger black community regarding the unjust acquittal of Officer Darren Wilson in the murder of Michael Brown. Over two months ago, a white police officer in Ferguson repeatedly shot an unarmed teenage black boy, killing him on the scene. Brown’s body was left in the streets for 4 hours and 32 minutes. Since then, demonstrations have taken place across the country, calling for Wilson’s arrest and conviction. Protestors have been vilified by the media and have been attacked by security forces using the same tear gas and riot gear used in the West Bank of Palestine, while Michael Brown’s name has been unjustly smeared in the media. Yesterday, a grand jury of nine white jurors and three black jurors decided against indicting Wilson in a 9-3 decision. This case is one of countless cases of black lives being unjustly taken at the hands of police and vigilantes and the failure of the justice system to prevent these crimes and hold those responsible for these crimes accountable. As students who stand in solidarity with those oppressed by white supremacy, colonialism, and apartheid, we call on the immediate pursuit of federal charges against Officer Wilson by the US Department of Justice and an end to police brutality in Ferguson, in America, and across the world. From Palestine to Ferguson, with love. - UCSD SJP.
