Students in the Theatre for Young Audiences Master of Fine Arts - TopicsExpress

Students in the Theatre for Young Audiences Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Central Florida are presenting And Then Came Tango. The play is inspired by the true story of Roy and Silo, two male chinstrap penguins living in New York’s Central Park Zoo that form a bond, “adopt” an egg and raise the hatchling named Tango. The play will run at UCF on March 23 and April 12 and at the Orlando Repertory Theatre on April 6 and 13. Playwright Emily Freeman is an Orlando native whose original work weaves dance, storytelling and music, while teaching the values of diversity and acceptance. Freeman began developing the play in 2010 as an MFA candidate at the University of Texas at Austin. It was first produced in the 2011 Cohen New Works Festival, and it won the 2013 Outstanding TYA Play at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. And Then Came Tango was scheduled to tour public elementary schools throughout Austin, Texas in 2012, but the tour was cancelled after the first performance over concerns for “age appropriateness.” Freeman feels that “there are very few plays for young people produced in the U.S. that celebrate and explore family diversity. This play works toward starting to fill the gaps in the Theatre for Young Audiences canon.” Freeman states “Throughout the play, the definition of family is extended beyond normative representations. Family can be an entire colony of penguins, a young girl and her single mom, a zookeeper and the animals he tends or two male penguins with their adopted egg.” Admission is free and performances at UCF and The REP are open to the public. And Then Came Tango is recommended for ages six and older, but is an experience designed for intergenerational audiences and all varieties of families. Performances will be at: · UCF Performing Arts Center Bldg. 119T Studio 1 on April 12 at 2 p.m. · UCF Visual Arts Building Auditorium on March 23 at 2 p.m. · The REP on April 6 at 3:30 p.m. (includes a special post show question and answer session for educators and parents.) · The REP and April 13 at 1:00 p.m. · The REP on April 13 at 3:30 p.m. For more information visit https://facebook/projecttangotour For more information, contact: Ann Kinnebrew, Tour Coordinator MFA Candidate University of Central Florida projecttango2014@gmail [email protected]
