Students raise concern over UBD swimming pool RAFIDAH HAMIT BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN Tuesday, January 13, 2015 FEMALE students of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) have expressed concerns on the safety of the university’s open Olympic-sized swimming pool that is expected to be ready later this year. Fatimah Az-Zahra Tassim, a UBD student said that a number of female students have raised concerns on whether the new pool, which is part of a $6 million planned extension of UBD’s sports complex, will be safe for females to swim there. “It is a question that a lot of the females are thinking of especially since there is a strong community of the Muslim Youth Club (MYC),” Fatimah told The Brunei Times. “I suppose the swimming pool can be made safe for females to swim just like what they did at the recent water park in Jerudong – they would have to adhere the appropriate swimwear for both females and males,” said the 23-year-old. Fatimah suggested that there should be a certain time limit for females to swim and a female security guard to deter loitering and people snooping around the female changing area. “There are only male security guards in UBD, there should be female security guards too as well as female lifeguards,” she added. A concerned parent, who declined to be named, said that security should be tightened if female students are using the swimming pool. “If my daughter wanted to swim there, I’d want her brother or any male family member to accompany her at all times. “I am also aware that there are quite a lot of foreign workers around that area and it is also a secluded place, I don’t want anything to happen to anyone. I hope that the university will take the necessary measures when the construction of the pool is complete,” said the parent. Sharing the same views, another student, Ella Izah Hussin, said that females should also play a part and ensure that they are aware of the surroundings at all times. “I am aware that it might be awhile until the swimming pool is complete but we must take action early and avoid any unwanted things from happening,” said Ella. The present sports complex comprised a range of sports facilities for tennis, petanque, basketball, badminton, squash and football. It also has an existing indoor sports hall, gymnasium and a grandstand. Renovation works will be made on the existing surauon the first floor of the complex. The extension will include an exercise hall, cafeteria, administration office, lobby and reception on the ground floor, as well as two aerobics studios, gym studios and a lounge area. The expansion project is slated to be completed by November 2015. It is part of the 10th National Development Plan (RKN10). The Brunei Times
