Students sail in 2 boats Prepare for March examination, competitive exams at the same time... Srinagar: As the March session examination nears, students in the valley are sailing in two boats. While they prepare for the examination of the previous session they have the stress to complete the curriculum of the competitive exams. “I am preparing for Class 12 examination and also studying for the Common Entrance Examination which is held in June,” said Mehak Bilal, a science student. The March session examination was announced by state government after the devastating floods damaged most of the schools and infrastructure across the valley. While similar problem is being faced by students of all classes, the higher secondary students are in a dilemma over the entrance examinations which are held in the month of June-July every year. “We had prepared for the Class 10 examination but after the floods everything was washed out from our memory. Now while we have been revising the books of previous year, we also have started working on next year’s syllabus,” said Soliha, a student of Presentation Convent School. Former Secretary of State Board of School Education Bashir Ahmed Dar said the decision of March session was taken in haste. “They took the decision without taking reality into consideration…as far classes first to ninth are concerned no government has a right to detain students. Instead, they should have been given mass promotion since they had completed their curriculum,” he told Rising Kashmir. Expressing concern over the high stress amid the dilemma of working on two sessions among the students, Dar said that it would be advisable for the new government to immediately conduct board exams in March besides promote the lower classes till ninth. He said March examinations would depend on weather conditions also thus there are chances that they might extend till April, leaving less time for the students to cover the portions for next examinations. Hundreds of students are already thronging coaching centres to catch up with the curriculum of entrance examination. Dar said more than the state level entrance examination, national entrance examination which students from valley taken every year is a thing to worry. “Even if class 10 and 12 exams were held in November, it would have saved the students great stress. But now they should quickly conduct board exams and also once for all decide on which season the examinations should be taken in the state,” he added. Parents also lament over their helplessness to let their children go through this grind.
