Studies suggest a novel approach is needed for informed consent. Are you using video consents at your institution? Research constantly faces the challenge of achieving TRUE informed consent from our potential research participants. A study with 194 parent-child dyads “observed significantly better overall comprehension of the hypothetical study and the research procedures for children and parents” when exposed to the video or animated descriptions as compared with text. (O’Lonergan & Forster-Harwood, 2011). In a study involving one hundred patients, researchers observed significantly better comprehension and an increase in patient satisfaction when using a multimedia approach with paper instruction. (Kim, Koh, Rhim, Karm, Yu, Lee, Shin & Leem, 2012). In a patient group with less than or equal to a 12th grade education, patients given video consents scored 73.1% comprehension as compared to the verbal group showing 54.2%. (Rossi, Guttman, MacLennan & Lubowitz, 2005). The multimedia experience is “visually and technologically engaging, capturing the viewer’s attention and prolonging educational content exposure.” (O’Lonergan & Forster-Harwood, p. 923). The value of a centralized library of animated consents allows for the consent conversation to be “controlled for clinical details and information, thereby improving accuracy and quality.” (O’Lonergan & Forster-Harwood, p. 923).
