Stumbled upon this album recently -- and thought today Id post it here for fellow members: It is from America-residing Keerthik Sasidharan, whose writings I have seen in some leading (Indian) journals -- and I know is son of dancer Kottakkal Sasidharan. Keerthik writes: ...from the Magnum archive today, I found three photos of an unknown boy learning Kathakali. These were taken in 1952 by the Swiss photographer Werner Bischoff. The photos had no names of the subject, nor the location or a date but were presumably taken for Life magazine. Turns out the student is the great Kathakali dancer Kalamandalam Gopi, now a master & artiste and recipient of many laurels. Bischoff, incidentally, died two years after these photos were taken in 1954 in a car crash somewhere in the Andes mountains. I am not sure if the existence of these photos is well known. Makes one wonder how many such undocumented little treasures are strewn all over. Kind of a nice little surprise on a cold NY day. PS: Maybe this group already saw this matter posted (but that I think is no big issue).
