Sub : INTERFACE BETWEEN SPIRITUAL AND TEMPORAL POWERS. How does one look at the initiative of Pope Francis to directly pronounce on the conflict in Syria, which to all appearances is a civil and temporal matter? As such it can be regarded to be under the jurisdiction of political and government powers. And so this initiative of Pope Francis should promote a healthy discussion on the relation between spiritual and temporal powers. It would become clear that the lines of demarcation between the two spiritual and temporal powers, though clearly defined, are not to be so separated as to be dichotomised. The two powers though distinct are clearly inter related, when it is a matter of life and death, of human beings and their fundamental rights and dignity as human beings and as children of God, which temporal powers are also obliged to respect. Both the temporal and spiritual powers are essentially for the good, the total well being of all human beings and every human person. I congratulate Pope Francis for shedding further light on the relationship between temporal and spiritual powers by his historic intervention.
