Subject: Important information regarding a new malware threat CryptoLocker is a malicious program known as ransomware. This type of malware usually stops you from using your computer until you pay a certain amount of money (ransom). CryptoLocker is different: your computer and software keep on working, but your personal files, such as documents, spreadsheets and images, are encrypted by the malware rendering them useless. CryptoLocker reveals itself only AFTER it has scrambled your files, which it does only if it is online and has already identified you and your computer to the encryption server run by the criminals. The most common infection vectors for CryptoLocker are spear-phishing e-mails with malicious attachments. The attachment is usually a zip file containing a PDF file which, when opened, executes CryptoLocker. Many of the spear-phishing e-Mails identified to this point have been created to look like communications from the Payroll Department or from legitimate companies such as UPS, DHL and FedEx. Some CrytpoLocker communications have also included the subject Voice Message from Unknown Caller. CryptoLocker does not require special or privileged account access and immediately encrypts all user-accessible files on any mapped networks or storage devices after execution. Upon encrypting the accessible files, CryptoLocker displays a message giving victims 72 to 100-hour countdown while demanding a payment of $100 to $300 by way of GreenDot, MoneyPak or Bitcoins in exchange for the decryption key. If you receive an unexpected e-mail containing a link or attachment you do one or all of the following: 1. Hover your mouse pointer over the link BUT DO NOT CLICK. Look at the address within the link. If it is not what you are expecting to see, dont click it! 2. Contact the sender to verify the validity of the email. 3. DELETE IT!
