Subject: Loan modification scam Hello: I have been informed of a loan modification scam involving debtors who are in a chapter 13. Scammers can know that a debtor is applying for a loan modification from the application they make with the court. Please tell anybody who asks to verify the information about anyone who asks them for money over the phone. These people will use scare tactics i.e. if you don’t send me the money right now the modification will be denied. No legitimate servicer would do that. Have them ask for the written trial modification letter and comply with the requirements for the trial modification letter and never to send money based on contact over the phone. Here is the incident reported by another trustee: > I just finished a phone conversation with the Debtor who was almost > the victim of a loan modification scam while in bankruptcy. The Debtor > had received a call from a man who identified himself as Mike Rogers > with PHH Mortgage. Mike Rogers phone number is 940-440-8192. Mike told > him that he was with PHH mortgage and that the Debtors loan > modification had been approved but that in order to qualify the Debtor > had to pay about $1400 within the hour. The Debtor called me and my > first thought was that this was a scam. I called Mike Rogers and > when I asked where he was located he hung up. I then called back and > told him I was trying to help the Debtor and he said he was with PHH. > When I asked what department he said loan modifications. When I asked > what city and state so I could verify this with PHH he again hung up. There appears to be a new, very dangerous scam. > Where this man could have obtained the information about the loan > modification that the Debtor had applied for I dont know. Please disseminate this.
