Subject: The Hobbit, part 2 of the film as opposed to the novel It has been over thirty years since I read The Hobbit. Thus, I may be misremebering the novel I read some three decades past. However, from what I remember, Bilbo snuck into Smaugs lair, found what he was looking for, got caught by Smaug, and after a fairly brief conversation with the dragon managed to sneak his way past Smaug to the dwarves waiting outside. In the recent film adaptation, there is an absurd and protracted battle in Smaugs lair between Smaug and the dwarves, which appears to be as poorly written as the stupid scene from Return of the King on the stairs to Mordor involving Frodo repudiating Sam for a trick of Gollums. Is my memory serving me poorly? Did Tolkien actually write and publish anything like that stupid battle scene between Smaug and the dwarves in Smaugs lair, or was it -- like the scene from Return of the King -- rubbish added by poor writers for no apparently good reason save perhaps to make Tolkien look like a hack that he was not?
