Submission is a Command of God It is important for every Christian woman to be convinced in her own mind that living in submission to her own husband is a command of God. Many who agree that the laws God gave to Moses on Mt. Sinai are commands, but they hesitate to look at New Testament instructions as commands. There is a difference. The Old Testament commands were negative - Thou shall not... Jesus said, If you love Me, keep My commandments..., (John 14:15); He that has My commandments and keeps them, he it is that loves Me..., (John 14:21); and John said in his epistle, And by this we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He that says, I know Him, and keep not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (1 John 2:3-4). Those who truly know and love Christ will be eagerly desirous of performing in their lives the commands which come to them through the New Testament writers. One such command is submission. If a woman is not convinced that this principle is Gods command, she will be swayed by the unscriptural advice offered in magazine articles and books by Christians and non-Christians alike. When a woman does not realize as she submits to her own husband that it is God, not man, she is obeying, it becomes a matter of one sinner putting herself at the mercy of another. This is not rational. But if submission is Gods command and He is the one a woman obeys when she submits to her husband, God is responsible for the outcome. That adds a whole new dimension, a proper attitude, and transforms obedience into submission. The woman then, when obeying her own husband will say first, Yes, Lord, then Yes, Dear. Since submission is a command, every wife has a choice to make: obey or disobey God. The choice is the same as for any of Gods other commands. Like all other commands there are rewards for obedience: peace, joy, an open line of fellowship and communication with God and blessings to her and her husband. There are also consequences for disobedience: loss of fellowship and communion with God, unrest of heart and mind, guilt in her life and a negative influence on her husband. When a woman disobeys God in her relationship to her husband, she suffers the same consequences of disobedience that God has determined for any person who disobeys Him in other commands.
