Submitted a couple minutes ago in respons to the New York Times article: nytimes/…/restored-forests-are-making-inroad… This story provides hope to those who understand the terrible and often irreversible destruction caused by deforestation. And while the news is positive in some locations, the USA itself continues to damage its own publically-owned forests by unsustainable logging. Here in Wisconsin, USA, extreme right-winger Governor Scott Walker has moved to increase logging as a political move to reward political supporters. Moreover, the peat bogs that occur throughout much of the north central and northeastern USA are the most effective ecosystems when it comes to sequestering carbon. Unfortunately, past logging and proposed future logging continues to damage these critical ecological systems. For the next two years, folks will see a massive push to exploit public forest lands in the USA by the new Republican majority in Congress. It will be up to the public and President Obama to stop these moves to destroy forests and other natural resources here and around the world.
