....Suboptimal nutrition is contributing to the epidemic of mental illness.... Nutrition matters, and if were really ready to get serious about mental health, we need to get serious about the critical role played by nutrition... If you have any interest in optimum nutrition, in enabling a healthier and happier body/mind or population, this is a must watch... In 17minutes and 42 seconds, I got a new hero.... She says what needs to be heard in an em-passioned and enlightened way. The facts, stats, numbers and knowledge is great. It is fantastic also seeing this info going mainstream, having attended conferences this year where this was all very much what were being taught in both optimum nutrition and functional medicine... she brings in nutrients, and the gut brain connection too. The surprisingly dramatic role of nutrition in mental health, by Julia Rucklidge is just this latest TedTalk Im sharing. Ive transcribed her summary here... with a couple of other things she said that made me thin, they follow later... .... consider whether the medications that they(doctors) prescribe are contributing to the poor long-term outcome to some people with mental illness. But eating well and, when appropriate, additional nutrients can improve the mental health of many people.... Take universal prevention seriously, by optimising the nutrition of those who are vulnerable. We dont wait for the heart attack to hit in order for us to modify lifestyle behaviours that we know contribute to heart disease. It should be no different with mental health. An easy way to implement a universal prevention would be to have midwives tell pregnant woman about the importance of nutrition. Nutrient-depleted mothers produce nutrient-depleted children. Nutrient poor foods during pregnancy increase the chances that your child will have a mental health problem. Learn about the risks of cheap processed foods. Michael Pollan states cheap food is an illusion, There is no such thing as cheap food. The price is paid somewhere. And if it is not paid at the cash register, then it is charged to the environment, and to the public purse in the form of subsidies... and it is charged to your health. All children need to learn how to cook. All children need to know that food doesnt have to come in a packet. Schools could reflect on the content of their lunch menus..... .... ultimately, we have the responsibility to teach them that every time they put something in their mouths, they make a choice... to eat something nourishing, or something nutritionally depleted..... And her closing which I will paraphrase in that the British navy knew of the benefits of lime in preventing scurvy however it took 264 years for them to utlilise and officially implement that science and get all ships carrying citrus... my question, and hers is, why are we waiting to do more with nutrition, when we know this now? (There are several Nutritional Therapists who specialise in optimising nutrition aimed specifically in improving mental health. I am in no way advocating stopping meds in any way, however, maybe this was what you needed to see/hear to help get that added support. Be sure if you do choose to see a Nutritionist that they are qualified, certified and registered.) https://youtube/watch?v=3dqXHHCc5lA
