Substantial environmental and economic benefits are possible if we are all part of the used tyre reuse chain - Liverpool Plains Shire Council (LPSC) Director Environmental Services, Ron Van Katwyk, is advising residents that Council’s Waste Management Depot in Quirindi has used tyres available, free of charge, for use in septic system rubble drain construction. He is also reminding residents that used tyres suitable for the protection of water meters are available through a Water Services Department initiative by calling the Customer Services Desk on 6746 1755. “Over the years, properties have been supplied with tyres for their water meters to help prevent freezing in winter. Council realises that these can be misplaced and provides replacements, free of charge. It is worth remembering that repairs necessary to meters found damaged by frost, without a tyre, are invoiced to the property owner so I encourage residents to get a replacement if necessary,” Mr Van Katwyk said. “Used tyres are also being utilised successfully in the construction of septic system rubble drains and transpiration pits. Council’s Waste Management Depot in Quirindi also has used tyres suitable for this purpose and again they can be obtained free of charge. “Re-use of tyres is environmentally friendly and helps reduce the stockpiles at the recycling depot. This in turn helps reduce costs to the community for the eventual disposal of these products,” he said. “Disposal of used tyres is an increasing problem, and an expensive one for communities as a whole. Illegally dumped tyres are an ongoing problem that cause environmental degradation not to mention substantial costs to ratepayers. Please report any illegally dumped tyres you may notice to the Customer Service Desk,” he continued. “The economic and environmental benefits to the Shire if we are all part of the reuse chain for used tyres is substantial. Contact Jim White at the Waste Management Centre on 0427 236 081 to either arrange for disposal of used tyres or to obtain them for use in septic system construction,” Mr Van Katwyk concluded.
