BUHAY Party-list Representative Lito Atienza scored the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for its inaction in reducing the number of buses plying Edsa despite studies and recommendations made by various agencies. “The LTFRB has failed to do its job in regulating the unnecessary number of buses causing bottlenecks and traffic jams on different parts of Edsa. This, despite the studies conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the University of the Philippines National Center for Transportation Studies (UPNCTS) including The World Bank, revealed that the number of buses on Edsa can be reduced by as much as 50 percent without sacrificing the needs of the public,” Atienza said. During the meeting of the Committee on Metro Manila Development, Atienza also pointed out that many of the buses along Edsa have only a handful of passengers even during rush hour. When asked by Atienza on what the LTRFB is doing to address this problem, Chairman Gines could only reply that they were still studying the matter. “These studies were done and presented to them more than a year ago and yet they are still studying the matter? They should start doing their job and alleviate the daily burden that motorists and commuters alike have to endure everytime they take Edsa. These daily gridlocks not only affect the mobility and productivity of the public but also affect the economy,” a visibly angry Atienza stressed.
