Success Secret # 1: Good Planning If you fail to plan, you plan to fail, they say. Your life should thus be on purpose and plan. If you want to succeed in life, it is important for you to set out a good plan for your life. You should know what you want to do with your life. A plan will chart the road you would take into greatness. It is advisable to put your plans in writing. If you have not done that yet, take a book and put down whatever you wish to achieve in your academics, career / profession, marriage and ministry (under these headings, as it applies to you). In the same vein, make daily, weekly, monthly and yearly plans and put it all in black and white. You would be surprised that as you do, you will get a clearer picture of what you would want your life to become. This gives you a sense of purpose with which you can forge on with your life and realize great successes in your field of endeavor. Moreover it will help you not only to keep track of the progress you are making over time, but also stay on course and make any adjustments along the line. What do you consider when drawing up a good plan for your life? A good plan will be very ambitious. You should dare to dream big. It may be a vision or a burden on your heart of what you want to accomplish for humanity and posterity. To soar up high, dare to find lasting solutions to some problems facing society, as this is one good way to make a difference. Arguably, that is the way you will make history. Most great people are people who discover and invent things, tackle problems of society, change the status quo and bring about new ways of doing (old) things. Our God is great and His plan for our lives is to make us great, even beyond our wildest dreams. I get encouraged when I read Jeremiah 29: 11, which reads, ‘For I know the thoughts I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give an expected end.’ That great future you wish or expect to have is the very plan God has for your life! Many a time, your desire is God’s design for your life! However, that is not to say whatever you desire, even if unrighteous in the sight of God, is God’s design for your life. While your dreams should not be mediocre, that is also not to say your plans should be unrealistic and unreasonable. At the bottom-line, you should not seek your own glory but God’s. A good plan will set out time-bound targets you would want to hit in your field of endeavor. You will answer questions like: When should I start and finish my project or degree? When do I want to get married? When do I take a vacation or a break? When should I start and stop learning? and so on. Set time limits for your plans. You may not meet all those set times, but it will do you some good. It is said that any time means no time. If you don’t define your plans with respect to time, you will get to do nothing and time will be getting on. A good plan will be flexible, not rigid. It is important to have several alternatives in your plans, some backup plans. It is said that there are many ways of killing a cat. There are many routes to your final destination. So don’t limit yourself to just a fixed, rigid plan for the choice of your school, your program of study, your dream kind of spouse, your dream job, your dream ministry, etc. Otherwise you may get wounded in your heart, disappointed, if things do not go the way you wanted. Maybe what you like most will not be the best in God’s plan for your life. ‘There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand’ (Proverbs 19: 21). A good plan will be made with good counsel. Wise King Solomon says, ‘Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counselors they are established’ (Proverbs 15: 22). There are people already making it big in your desired area of service. You can to go to them and humbly ask for advice. Ask them to share with you their secrets, how they made it to the top, and follow their seasoned advice. If you have any problems at any crossroad in life, pray to God and go to an authority on that field. Any problem you are facing today has been confronted and overcome by somebody before. Nothing is so new in this world. History is spiral – what is happening today has ever happened in a similar way before elsewhere. Though this information on good planning and greatness is not exhaustive, I hope it suffices for now and helps us all!
