Success, my clip board got into a tizz! There were also battles once I started domestic science classes at school. We were always given a list of ingredients to bring the following week. We seldom had any of these in the house, since my mother didn’t cook. I did the cooking and I could assemble most of the ready prepared meals to come out of the local supermarket, but things like flour, icing sugar and baking powder were strangers to our larder. Since mother couldn’t afford to buy all this extra food, she decided that whatever I cooked in school should be our main meal that night. So I always arrived with a different set of ingredients to everyone else. This did not endear me to the domestic science teacher, who was usually quite sweet and adored by all the other girls in the class. Why didn’t I tell her the truth? I have no idea, except that I was either ashamed or too shy. I often deliberately left the ingredients at home, knowing I would get into trouble, but preferred this to the embarrassment of arriving yet again with the wrong foods. The pancakes were a particular bone of contention, because my mother bought flour especially for the occasion. They are not particularly nice cold, but my mother declared they would do for supper. My pancakes did not turn out all that well and I was fiercely envious of the others as they ate theirs fresh and hot at the end of the lesson. I wrapped mine carefully in paper and they spent the rest of the day in my satchel where they got very squashed! I cooked pancakes week after week in my domestic science classes until all the flour was used up. Frankly my pancake manufacturing never got any better despite repeated attempts, and they didn’t impress my mother either as we chewed our way through them every Tuesday night.
