Such a good review on Auburn, it sounds great Apr 30 2011- The campus is very pretty and I rather like the small college town feel. The people are generally quite friendly and there is a lot of school spirit and pride ESPECIALLY in the football team. War Eagle is the rally cry of the university and they will waste no time beating it mercilessly into your head at ?Camp War Eagle?. Auburn has a more laid back feel than many other colleges I?ve visited which is one of the things that I found most attractive in it. Despite the more laid back feel the school work has not been a cake walk by any means; if you want to make good grades, be prepared to work. Auburn is perhaps best known for its engineering/architecture/building science programs but its pharmacy, veterinary medicine, agriculture, and business schools are also well respected as well. The student body and even a considerable amount of the professors are more conservative both culturally and politically than most universities being located in the Bible-Belt. Will occasionally see pro-life displays (which mainly consist of pictures of aborted fetuses) and will also occasionally hear/see someone reading aloud from a Bible talking about how we are all heathens and sinners and we should all turn ourselves over to Jesus before we all burn in hell (often times he/she is not actually affiliated with the school, just some random fanatic). Was a bit of a culture shock for me being from central Florida but there were still plenty of people here closer to me culturally as well. Most students are from Alabama or the Atlanta metro area. Like many southern schools there is a pretty large Greek community especially among women (roughly 24% male, 34% female). Most popular bars are located right off campus around the intersection of College and Magnolia. PLENTY of gorgeous women here but a lot of them are in sororities and many wont have anything to do with you if you arent in a fraternity. Do not let the fairly heavy Greek presence here intimidate you though if you are not interested in being part of a sorority or a fraternity, there are still PLENTY of other ways to meet people and have a social life just be sure to put yourself out there. A lot of the guys wear typical frat gear (visors, short beige shorts, Sperry?s, croakies on their sunglasses, Guy Harvey shirts) or hunting camo and boots. If a woman is in a sorority she wont ever be seen on campus not wearing her sorority shirt with the little pocket in front and about 90% of all women wear Nike Tempo track shorts all. the. time. (even the ones who obviously dont run/workout). The place gets PACKED on Gameday for football games. RVs will often get here several days in advance to get a spot and dont even bother trying to drive downtown after 10am on Gameday Saturday mornings. Gameday experience in Jordan-Hare Stadium is a truly awesome experience. Other sports dont get half the amount of attention football does unfortunately. There are things I dislike about Auburn but overall I have a pretty positive opinion of it. I have definitely learned many new things, met new people, and grown a lot as a person since Ive been here. It can be easy to get caught up in the social scene but dont neglect your school work or you will flunk out as is the case in most colleges. Auburn is not for everyone however. If you need a larger more urban environment and you cant stand a large amount of deep south culture/politics then Auburn is not for you.
