Such a wonderful photo! A great influence on my life was Helen Hayes, who was also deaf-blind and about twenty years younger than Helen Keller. They were friends and known as big Helen and little Helen. Helen Hayes would tell me of their adventures together and conversations and giggles with flying fingers which obviously no one else could hear! My Helen was the first known deaf-blind student to graduate from the public school system and bravely even maneuvered the Boston trolley system. After graduation she also attended Perkins School for the Blind and valued the school highly. She became a public speaker and pioneer advocate for the handicapped even before the Kennedy administration. She was a recipient of the Anne Sullivan Congressional Medal of Honor Award and spoke at Helen Kellers funeral. She and her husband, Will, had the closest relationship. They had no children, but I was like their daughter.. Helen would say being blind and deaf was not a handicap, it was an inconvenience! Such an inspiration and wonderful example of living life to the fullest!
