Such was the price she paid, and the niggardly gains she acquired - TopicsExpress

Such was the price she paid, and the niggardly gains she acquired ought not to have been any great surprise, for Italy more or less got what she had fought for. Though she was cheated of Dalmatia, the acquisition of that province would not have made any difference. It was as poor and backwards as the others, Dalmatia would not have made Italy noticeably more wealthy or powerful. If the Italian people were angry about the results of the war they should have been angry with their own stupidity, for they essentially got what they wanted, but then realised that it did them no good. Yet another instance of democracy and nationalism proving to be counterproductive towards a nations real goals. If Germany or Austria had been truly democratic the Austro-German alliance might well have never been signed, and even if it were signed, the contracting parties might not have honoured it. But the Austrian and German statesmen were more clever than their uninformed masses, and it was their good fortune that the opinion of the latter was unable to influence their decisions. Woe to Italy who could not say the same.
