Suddenly, we find political leaders of all hues descending on Uttarakhand. We see politicos spewing allegations against each other. Where were all these people when rampant construction was underway on the banks of the major rivers flowing in the area. Where were all these people when bribes were being paid to acquire land rights illegally. Who is to blame for this mass destruction, the annihilation of centuries old temples and destruction of the houses of locals. What will happen is like the Nirbhaya case, the media will continue to play it up zealously and a few days later it will vanish from our memories. We will see a lot of politicians from different political parties making allegations and counter-allegations. But who really cares for the people. Whos is accountable for the deaths and destruction of properties. Will someone bother to see that the affected are rehabilitated and compensated appropriately. Maybe we need to re-look, re-examine and re-evaluate our idea of a democratic state where politicians will be accountable to the people, a proper and affective disaster management mechanism will be in place and lives of people do not become cheap pawns, threatened by the fury of nature.
